Ranshima_a（Ranshima Beach ⇒ Municipal Cemetery）
Start from in front of the monument which shows Ranshima is the birthplace of swimming in the sea in Hokkaido Area.
Turn your back toward the sea and walk toward National Route 5. There are several routes that go through the residential area around there to get to National Route 5, you'd better take the wide and asphalt-paved road.
Cross National Route 5, turn left at the corner with traffic lights, and pass in front of a purple barber house. Please note that you can't go over railroad tracks or the Ranshima River when you turn at the other corners such as toward Ranshima Station or Ranshima Kaikan(Community Hall)on National Route 5.
Cross railroad tracks.
Go over the Ranshima River.
Go straight until a narrow slope appears on your left, go up the slope.
You will get to Ranshima municipal cemetery in about 16 to 18 minutes after the start.
This is the view from the slope to the municipal cemetery. On a clear day, you can enjoy a sea view from here. I've heard explosion sounds to scare animals away from the area. If you walk here at night, you should be prepared yourself as you may encounter animals such as foxes, deers, or bears.
Ranshima_b（Ranshima Beach ⇒ Oshoro Chuo Elementary School Oshoro Junior High School）
Start from in front of the monument which shows Ranshima is the birthplace of swimming in the sea in Hokkaido Area.
Walk seeing the sea on your left, and pass by the mound for whales.
Turn right at the corner before a red fireplug.
Pass in front of Ranshima Shrine, the building of the Fire Dept. Ranshima Substation, and a building of public housing.
When you meet National Route 5, turn left and pass by a gas stand.(This gas stand has closed down.)
Go narrow walkway along National Route 5.
You will get to the gate of Oshoro Chuo Elementary School and Oshoro Junior High School in about 18 to 22 minutes after the start.

Oshoro_a（Oshoro Fishing Harbor ⇒ Shonenji Temple）
Oshoro Bay is a placed bay, there is Oshoro Marine Biological Station belonging to Hokkaido University nearby it.
Start walking from the Oshoro fishing harbor.
There are restaurants and guest houses along the road for the people who enjoy marine activities in summer.
Pass in front of Oshoro Shrine, and go up the straight slope.
Pass by Oshoro Post Office and Oshoro Community Hall, you will get to Shonenji Temple in 10 to 13 minutes after the start.

Shioya_a（Shioya Beach ⇒ Ito Sei Literary Monument）
Start walking from the entrance to Shioya Beach.
Go up the gentle slope seeing the sea on your right.
After about 5 minutes' walk, the road meets National Route 5. Speakers stand by there.
Cross National Route 5, and go straight.
A pedestrian bridge will appear soon. You can pass under it or go up its stairs, both ways take you to the monument.
After passing under the pedestrian bridge, turn left at the next corner and go up a slope. You will get to the Ito Sei Literary Monument in 10 to 13 minutes after the start.
There is a walkway from National Route 5 behind the monument. If you have no difficulty with going up through the bush, this walkway leads you to the monument from National Route 5 quickly. On a fine day, you can enjoy a good sea view from here. Beside the small monument park, a new camping site has been opened.
Shioya_b（Shioya Beach ⇒ Shioya Elementary School）
Start walking from the entrance to Shioya Beach.
Turn your back toward the sea, and walk along the road.
Pass by Shioya Post Office. The road begins to slope gently.
Pass by Otaru City Shioya Service Center.
When you meet National Route 5, cross it and turn left.
Go along National Route 5, pass by the red torii gate of Shioya Shrine.
Turn right at the corner where the pole on which "小樽市立塩谷小学校：Shioya Elementary School" is written stands.
You will get to Shioya Elementary School in 12 to 17 minutes after the start.
Shioya_c（Shioya Beach ⇒ Uphill from Shioya Fishing Port）
Start walking from Shioya Beach bus stop, walk toward Shioya fishing port seeing the sea on your left.
Along a gentle slope, residences, restaurants and guest houses stand.
This is the view of a part of Shioya Beach from on the road after about 7 to 10 minutes' walk.
After going down along the road for a while, you will find a steep slope on your right.
There are several houses along the steep slope.
You can enjoy a sea view like this from the top of the slope after 12 to 14 minutes' walk from the start.

Shukutsu_a（Shukutsu Beach ⇒ Otaru Aquarium）
Start walking from Shukutsu Beach which is located under the hill where Harring Mansion and Hiyoriyama Lighthouse stand on.
Pass by the restaurants which serve local fresh seafood, turn right at the first corner.
Go up the slope to Otaru Aquarium and Shukutsu Panorama Observatory, you will enjoy a sea view in 5 to 6 minutes after the start. I met students of University pushing their yacht to evacuate from a typhoon.
Shukutsu_b（Shukutsu Fishing Port North ⇒ Closed Shukutsu Elementary School）
Start walking from Shukutsu Fishing Port North. There are facilities for scallop farming.
There are also facilities for yachts.
Pass by the Ibaraki family's Herring Fishery Lodge and the red torii gate of Ebisu Shrine. If you have no difficulty with going up through the bush, you can stop by the quiet Ebisu Shrine, known as the oldest shrine in Otaru, and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
Turn right at the corner where the blue sign on which "貴賓館：Kihinkan" is written stands.
Walk along the road, you will get to the closed Shukutsu Elementary School in 7 to 10 minutes after the start.

Shukutsu_c（Shukutsu Fishing Port South ⇒ Monument in front of Ryusenji Temple）
Start walking from Shukutsu Fishing Port South where you can enjoy the beautiful view of the fishing port with Hiyoriyama Lighthouse, Herring Mansion, and Otaru Aquarium.
Turn your back toward the sea, and walk toward Shukutsu Post Office.
Cross Prefectural Road 454, turn right in front of the Post Office, and pass by a liquor store "ASAI".
Turn left at the next corner.
The road becomes narrow.
The road becomes steep little by little.
You will get to the monument in front of Ryusenji Temple in 9 to 13 minutes after the start.

Takashima_a（Kitarei warehouse ⇒ Takashima-Inari Shrine)
Start walking from building of Kitarei warehouse which is located at the end of Takashima Fishing Port. Wave dissipating blocks are lined up on the coastline by the building.
Turn your back toward the sea, and walk toward Prefectural Road 454.
When you meet Prefectural Road 454, turn left and pass in front of Uzushio(This restaurant has closed down.) and Seicomart (a convenience store).
Turn right at the Takashima 1 intersection with traffic lights.
You will find the steep slope and torii gates of Takashima-Inari Shrine soon.
Go up the steep slope and stairs, you will find the shrine building standing toward the sea. It takes 9 to 14 minutes after the start.

Takashima_b（Takashima 1 Intersection ⇒ Takashima Community Hall ⇒ Takashima Elementary School）
Start walking from Takashima 1 intersection with traffic lights.
Pass by a flower shop "Hasegawa", Takashima-Inari Shrine, and Takashima Post Office.
Pass by barber "Sasanami", go straight along the road to get to Takashima Community Hall.
If you want to enjoy a sea view, before you get to Takashima Community Hall, find the sign on which "高台寺：Kodaiji Temple" is written on an electric pole, and turn right there.
If you have no difficulty with going up stairs, you can also visit Shorinji Temple on the left side of the road leading to Takashima Community Hall, and get a view of part of Takashima Fishing Port from between the houses.
You can also visit Shorinji Temple without using the stairs. Turn left when you see the sign of "正林寺：Shorinji Temple".
Keep on going up, past Takashima Community Hall a little, you will see the sea behind you.
Keep on going up the road, it becomes narrower and wider before Takashima Elementary School.
You will get to the gate of Takashima Elementary School in about 17 minutes after the start.
Takashima_c（Takashima 1 ⇒ Takashima 2 Chome Shinshouji Temple）
Start walking from Takashima 1 Chome, the area on the south side of Takashima Fishing Port and the northern end of Otaru Port, where fishing facilities and factories are located in.
Walk along the road.
Turn left at the corner by "Hakurin" bicycle shop.
Turn left at a small crossroad. After passing "Ogiwara grocery store", the road becomes steep.
You will get to Shinshoji Temple and see the sea after about 12 minutes' walk.

Temiya/Ironai_a（Umaya Quay Wall ⇒ Temiya 3）
Umaya Quay Wall is a popular place to enjoy fishing. Seagulls are observing people to get fishes luckily.
Turn your back on the sea, walk toward Prefectural Road 454.
Cross Prefectural Road 454, and go up the slope beside onsen house "Yunohana".
The slope becomes steep.
After 5 to 8 minutes' walk, you will see the sea from the road near by an octopus shop.
If you have time, you can go up along the slope and visit Nanzenji Temple. There is a monument for a marine accident which stands toward the sea. Next to the temple, a new restaurant has been opened.
Temiya/Ironai_b（Rinyu Morning Market ⇒ Temiya Chuo Elementary School）
Start walking near Rinyu Morning Market. This is the view toward the seaside area from the market.
Turn your back toward the seaside area, walk toward an intersection near by the entrance of Otaru Museum with an old rail wheel.
Cross the road, turn right, and pass in front of "Myrashiku-Temiya" (Residences with health and welfare services for the elderly). It doesn't matter whether you are a train freak or not, finding this train-shaped stone with a water tap in the small park next to the Myrashiku-Temiya will make you smile.
Go up the long slope called "Hagemashi-no-saka", pass by Temiya public housing.
You will get to this crossroad in 11 to 14 minutes. If you turn left, you will reach Temiya Chuo Elementary School, and if you turn right, you will reach Temiya Park.
This is the building of Temiya Chuo Elementary School.
The panorama of Otaru port from Temiya Park is great.
The park also has a room with tables and benches.

Ironai/Inaho/Minatomachi/Sakaimachi_a（Kitahama Quay Wall ⇒ Jukken slope）
Kitahama Quay Wall is a popular place to enjoy fishing. Chuo terminal disposal plant stands next to.
Turn your back toward the sea, start walking.
Cross the road, pass by "Lawson" (a convenience store).
Pass by the coffee restaurant covered with wood slices.
Turn right and pass by the side of Canal Park.
The Canal Park has fountains, and plays a role of the front garden of Former Otaru Branch of Nippon Yusen Co. Ltd. A part of the ground in the park is covered with concrete tiles with shiny glass beads. It reminds us that Otaru is a glass product city.
After passing by the Canal Park, go straight to Nishikimachi intersection.
Cross Prefectural Road 454, and pass by Temiya Post Office.
Turn left at the next traffic lights.
After walking 2 blocks, you will see a tower with a clock and steep slope "Jukken zaka". They were built in Meiji period, the tower was a fire tower, the wide slope worked as a fire break.
This is the view from the top of Jukken zaka. You will get here in about 15 to 24 minutes after the start.
Ironai/Inaho/Minatomachi/Sakaimachi_b（Ironai Pier Park ⇒ Inakita Community center）
Start walking from Ironai Pier Park.
Turn right and pass by Chuo terminal disposal plant and the factory of Hokkaican Co., Ltd.
Cross the road, and pass by "Lawson" (a convenience store).
Pass by the coffee restaurant covered with wood slices.
Turn right and pass by the side of Canal Park.

Ironai/Inaho/Minatomachi/Sakaimachi_c（Ironai Pier Park ⇒ Ryugu Shrine）
Start walking from Ironai Pier Park.
Cross Asahi bridge which is a beautiful yellow arch bridge.
Turn right at next intersection and go along Ryugu Street.
The road is a gentle slope, you can see the sea when you look back.
You will get to Ryugu Shrine Mae intersection in 16 to 27 minutes after the start.
Ironai/Inaho/Minatomachi/Sakaimachi_d（Hokkaido Otaru Local Government Building ⇒ Otaru Civic Center）
Start walking from in front of Otaru Regional Joint Government Building. It is close to Otaru Port No.3 Pier where international cruise ships dock.
On the other side of Otaru Regional Joint Government Building, new International Information Center opened in 2024.
Turn your back toward the sea, go straight on the main street which leads to Otaru station.
Go over the Otaru canal.
Cross the next intersection, there is the area major hotels stand.
You can find a statue of a dog by an old stone building (Canal Plaza).
The name of this dog is "Bunko", he is famous as the dog worked for the fire Dept.
After about 5 minutes' walk, turn right at the corner where a coffee shop with bike rentals stands.
You will get to Otaru Civic Center in 7 to 10 minutes after the start.
Ironai/Inaho/Minatomachi/Sakaimachi_e（Sapporo Legal Affairs Bureau Otaru Branch ⇒ Inaho Elementary School）
Start walking from near the building of Sapporo Legal Affairs Bureau Otaru Branch which is close to Otaru Port No.2 Pier. The tall building with antenna tower behind it is Otaru Regional Joint Government Building.
Turn your back toward the sea, walk and cross a road, go through the most popular tourist area with museums and restaurants in stone warehouses along Otaru Canal.
Go over the Otaru Canal, cross a road, and go straight on Nichigin Street. You will see solid buildings stand along the street.
The street becomes a little steep near the Bank of Japan Otaru Museum.
Go along the street, pass by Sun Mall Shopping Street and Miyakodori Shopping Street with their arcades. You will meet an intersection with National Route 5.
From the intersection to the bridge over a railroad, road is very steep. After going over the bridge, you will see the building of Otaru Police Station. Turn left at the next intersection.
You will get to Inaho Elementary School in 13 to 18 minutes after the start.
Ironai/Inaho/Minatomachi/Sakaimachi_f-1（Sapporo Legal Affairs Bureau Otaru Branch ⇒ Suitengu Shrine）
Start walking from near the building of Sapporo Legal Affairs Bureau Otaru Branch which is close to Otaru Port No.2 Pier. The tall building with antenna tower behind it is Otaru Regional Joint Government Building.
Turn your back toward the sea, walk and cross a road, go through the most popular tourist area with museums and restaurants in stone warehouses along Otaru Canal.

Turn left at the intersection by the Bank of Japan Otaru Museum.
Turn right when you meet Sushiya Street, middle of the street the Okobachi River runs.
Turn left by an Italian restaurant and go up the narrow slope.
The road curves a few times sharply, it isn't a dead end. If you found a dead end, you might have taken the wrong slope from the Sushiya Street.
The road meets with a wide road in front of a tall residential building.
Turn right there.
Go straight through the next intersection, pass by Former Sakai Elementary School.
If you have time, you can visit an old folk house "Suhara-tei" which stands on the way to Suitengu Shrine.
This is the entrance of Suitengu Shrine. You will get here in 11 to 17 minutes after the start.
You can enjoy the overall view of Otaru Port from Suitengu Shrine. In spring, you can also enjoy the beautiful Suitengu Shrine itself surrounded by cherry blossoms.
Ironai/Inaho/Minatomachi/Sakaimachi_f-2（Sakaimachi Parking ⇒ Suitengu Shrine）
Start walking from Sakaimachi tourist parking, cross the road and walk toward Sakaimachidori Shopping Street.
Turn right and go along the street for a while.
Each streetlight on the street has a number plate.
The slope called "Miharashizaka" or "Syussezaka" starts at near the streetlights No.15, 47, 48.
The slope is very steep, its pitch is 20%.
From the top of the slope, you can see the ships anchored at Otaru Port No.2 Pier.
To get to Suitengu Shrine, turn left at the intersection by Former Sakai Elementary School.
If you have time, you can visit an old folk house "Suhara-tei" which stands on the way to the Suitengu Shrine.
This is the entrance of Suitengu Shrine. You will get here in about 5 to 10 minutes after the start.

Arihorocho/Nobukacho/Katsunaicho/Chikko_a（Former Fruit and Vegetable Market ⇒ Futaba High School）
Start from the entrance of Former Fruit and Vegetable Market. There is a funeral hall near there.
Cross a road by a gas station.
Go up the steep slope between the gas station and a bookstore.
On a fine day, you can see a good view of Otaru Port from the top of the slope.
At night, it is difficult to see the conditions of the sea.
Going further with your back toward the sea, you will find Minami Otaru Station and Futaba High School soon, and Otaru General Hospital also. It takes about 7 to 10 minutes from the start.
Arihorocho/Nobukacho/Katsunaicho/Chikko_b（Otaru Ferry Terminal ⇒ Shin-Nantaru Market ⇒ Saiseikai Otaru Hospital）
Start from in front of Otaru Ferry Terminal.
Walk with your back toward the sea, cross the road at the intersection by a gas station.
Pass by the gas station, walk along the Katsunai River.
Go straight through the next intersection by Shin-Nantaru Market.
Turn right at the intersection by Saiseikai Otaru Hospital.
You will get to the entrance of Saiseikai Otaru Hospital in about 10 to 13 minutes after the start. When you look up at the elevated road goes behind the hospital, you will find the stairs to go up to the road above.

Arihorocho/Nobukacho/Katsunaicho/Chikko_c（Katsunai Pier South ⇒ Wing Bay Otaru）
Start walking from the southern part of Katsunai Pier. It is a few minutes' walk away from the building of Otaru Ferry Terminal.
Walk seeing the sea on your left, and the tall building of Katusnai Silo on your right.
Go along the road and pass by Otaru Port Marina.
Cross a road, you will get to Wing Bay Otaru. It takes about 10 minutes after the start.
The entrance of the parking space of Wing Bay Otaru is on the mountain side.

Funahamacho/Sakura_a（Higashi Otaru Beach ⇒ Higashi Otaru Community Hall）Stairs on the route
Start walking from Higashi Otaru Beach.
As railroad tracks run behind the beach, to get to the mountain side, go up to the road which goes over the railroad tracks and leads to National Route 5.
There are no crosswalk on National Route 5 around, only vehicles can go to the mountain side of National Route 5. To get to the mountain side on foot, turn left and go down the sideway before the intersection with National Route 5, use the underpass of National Route 5.
Turn right and go through the underpass to cross National Route 5.
Go up the stairs and exit this underpass.
Turn left at the intersection next to the exit of the underpass.
Cross a road at the next crosswalk, and go up the road by "長昌寺：Tyoshoji Temple”.
Turn left at the next corner.
You will get to Higashi Otaru Community Hall in 16 to 17 minutes after the start.
If you have time, go up the path in the municipal cemetery next to the Higashi Otaru Community Hall. You will see the sea.
There is another way to get to the Higashi Otaru Community Hall with using another underpass. Pass by the first underpass, go ahead until you find the Kumausu River.
Turn right and walk the path along the Kumausu River.
Go through the underpass.
Turn right at the next corner, cross the road, and go up the slope in front of Sakura Post Office. You will get to Higashi Otaru Community Hall in about 17 minutes after the start.

Asari_a（Asari Station ⇒ Asari Elementary School）
Start walking from in front of Asari Station which is facing the sea, small and lovely, and appeared in famous movies.
Walk with the sea on your right.
If you are lucky, you will find unique signs like this.
It says "Crow's nest under surveillance". Sounds interesting.
You can see the coastline of the bay towards Shukutsu area.
Turn left at the corner with a railroad crossing.
The road becomes steep after crossing the railroad tracks.
The pitch of the slope is 9%.
This is the view from the top of the slope.
There is the monument honoring the principal of old Asari Elementary School.
In front of the monument, a sign says "Don't play with the sledge on this slope". It gives us a warm feeling, feeling like listening to a message from the principal to kids.
Go toward National Route 5 and Asari Elementary School.
There are a police station, grocery stores, and restaurants around the Asari Elementary School. You will get there in about 15 minutes after the start.
Asari_b（Asari Beach ⇒ Asari Junior High School）
Start walking from Asari Beach. This beach is popular but is not open this year.
Walk with the sea on your right. Pass by the monument for the safety of railroad operation.
Turn left and cross the railroad tracks.
The road becomes narrow after crossing the railroad tracks.
The Masari River runs along the road.
When you look back, you can see the sea from the halfway of the slope.
The road divides into two ways before meeting National Route 5. Both ways lead to the National Route 5.
If you take the left way, the slope will be a little gentler. You will get to National Route 5 in 8 to 14 minutes, and at Asari Junior High School in 15 to 18 minutes after the start.

Zenibako_a（Zenibako Station ⇒ Hokkaido Hosho Milk Plant）
Start walking from in front of Zenibako Station.
Walk with the sea on your right. Turn left at the corner with a railroad crossing.
The road becomes steep after crossing the railroad tracks.
When you look back from the halfway of the slope, you can see the sea.
The road becomes steep little by little.
You will get to National Route 5, in front of the Hokkaido Hosho Milk Plant, in 13 to 19 minutes after the start. Walking and drinking milk may be a good combination to prevent osteoporosis.
Zenibako_b（Zenibako Station ⇒ Zenibako City Service Center）
Start walking from in front of Zenibako Station.
Walk with the sea on your right. Turn left at the corner with a railroad crossing.
The road becomes steep after crossing the railroad tracks.
When you look back from the halfway of the slope, you can see the sea.
Turn left at the corner where you can see a tall apartment building.
Go over the Zenibako River, pass by the tall apartment building, and pass through the trees.
Turn right at the intersection by a guest house "Keisei".
Go up the slope by the buildings of public housing and turn left at the next corner.
You will get to National Route 5, in front of the Zenibako City Service Center, in 14 to 20 minutes after the start.
Zenibako_c（Zenibako Station ⇒ Zenibako Elementary School）
Start walking from in front of Zenibako Station.
Walk with the sea on your left. Turn right at the intersection by Seven-Eleven(a convenience store).
You will meet a railroad crossing soon.
Cross the railroad tracks, turn right, and go up the slope. Enter the road on the right side of the torii gate and walk seeing the railroad tracks.
Turn left at the corner by Ryuganji Temple, walk a little, and look back, you will see the sea from the halfway of the slope.
Go along the road, and go straight through the next intersection.
You will get to National Route 5, in front of Zenibako Elementary School, in 18 to 20 minutes after the start.
If you have time, turn right at the next corner after passing by the Ryuganji Temple, you will enjoy a good sea view like this.
There is another way to get to National Route 5. Go straight after crossing the railroad tracks, turn right at the corner by an electrical store "Cosmos Member's Store Zenibako".
Go the left way at the next crossroad.
After passing by a kindergarten, you will meet National Route 5.
You will get to National Route 5, in front of Zenibako Elementary School, in 15 to 18 minutes after the start.
Zenibako Police Box is located next to the elementary school.
Zenibako_d（Zenibako Beach ⇒ Zenibako Citizen Center）
Start walking from Zenibako Beach nearby Zenibako yacht harbor.
Walk toward Zenibako Station seeing the sea on your right.
Pass in front of Seicomart (a convenience store).
Turn left at the intersection with a two-lane road which is not a dead end.
Go over a stream which runs among houses.
Go straight through the intersection with traffic lights.
Pass through Zenibako Industrial Park, and cross railroad tracks.
Turn right when you meet National Route 5.
Turn right at the intersection by Zenibako Terrace and "Tobex" loghouse exhibition place.

The road leads to the back side of Hokkaido Polytechnic College.
There is no gate on the back side of the College.
Turn left at next intersection, you will get to the gate of the Hokkaido Polytechnic College in 10 to 13 minutes after the start.
